Did you hear that people are putting crocheted cozies on their hummingbird feeders (or, bringing them inside at night) in the lower BC mainland in BC–to keep the liquid from freezing? Poor hummers … seems they don’t migrate there, but this year there’s been a lot of snow and unusually cold weather. CBC radio interviewed a parent who said his kid had been holding a hummingbird to warm it up. Can you imagine!
I don’t usually feed the birds, but this year I’ve actually been putting out stale bread for the magpies. I know it’s not the best for them, but I’m sure they still appreciate it when the weather is the equivalent of -34C here.

We must keep the hummingbirds alive! And, the magpies! First time I saw them was this summer in Calgary. Cool birds!
